Application Process

People who are interested in applying as an Interpreter need to meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
  • Proficient in more than one language
  • Living in New Zealand for 18 months or more
  • Available during normal business hours

Those who meet the criteria can apply using our online application form.  Applicants can expect a response from our office within two weeks of submission where we will ask for proof of residency as well as a copy of your current CV.

We will evaluate your application based on demand for the language(s) you speak, and then arrange a written assessment of your English skills.  Those who pass the written evaluation will be invited for an interview where we will discuss your qualifications and suitability to interpret for our organization.

Following the successful completion of the interview process, we will invite you to attend our introductory course.  The introductory in-house courses are run six-monthly. In Wellington, they consist of 17 weeks (approximately 50 hours) of evening and Saturday morning classes and language laboratory work. In Christchurch they are presented in 5 weekend modules plus site visits. They are delivered by NAATI-qualified trainers with extensive teaching and interpreting experience. A token charge (currently of $75), is made.

Upon completion of the course, a written test and oral assessment will be administered.  Those who pass the written and oral assessment will be offered a contract with Interpreting New Zealand.
